Cabin History

The Long Branch cabin was moved and restored at Boyd Mountain in 1995. The cabin was a originally erected in Whittier, NC near Bryson City in the 1820’s. The cabin was located on Rattlesnake Creek, at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 20’x14′ cabin wasa single family dwelling. The cabin was constructed of chestnut logs before the terrible blight that killed all the chestnut trees in the early 1900’s. The chestnut trees were cut on the property and hand hewed with a broad axe to make a one room cabin with a loft. Mud was used to chink in between the logs, and newspaper was used on the inside for insulation and a “lighter” look. The cabin had a root cellar for storage of apples, potatoes and winter vegetables. The chimney was made of rock from the area and clay was used for mortar to stack the rock.
